Review: The Yard Hostel

Is this the most chill spot in all of Bangkok?
Honestly, I am pretty sure that this is.
I arrived in Bangkok totally beat. The 14 hour flight on China Airlines, complete with a full hour of violent turbulence, 3 meals of indistinguishable meat and rice dishes, and a dead Kindle reader had my nerves a little fried. Then came an 8 hour layover in Taipei. Then a late night taxi. Not that I am complaining, I mean I was headed to Thailand but it was a long day nonetheless.
I stumbled into the Yard Hostel barely conscious, checked in as fast as I could even though it felt like I was moving through jello, and crashed into my bed in my 6 person dorm.
Fast-forward 10 hours, I'm coming to and panicking because I HAVE NO IDEA WHERE I AM. Oh shit, yeah, Thailand. I made it. I look around at the all white room and feel the cool breeze from the air con above. I toss on my flip flops and make my way downstairs. The whole place is made up of shipping containers and gives of a super hipster-meets-jungle kind of vibe. Breakfast is free, a big ole piece of white bread and creamy fresh butter and a fruit and yogurt parfait in a mason jar. Black coffee is poured for me by the smiley Thai man behind the little outside bar where all the food and drinks are served. I relax a little.
Over the next 3 days I spend time getting acclimated to Bangkok with the Yard as my jumping off point. I visit a husky cafe. I check out the street food. I get my first Thai massage (OUCH then AHH). I can't image a better way to slowly ease yourself into traveling, especially if you are a solo traveler. I write from the tiny patio chairs that are set up in the grassy lawn. I take hot showers in their well kept bathrooms. I get good nights sleep because its mostly quiet.
If you are looking for immediate social interaction, partying, and going nuts right off the bat this isn't for you. After a few days here I moved to a hostel that I knew would be much more poppin. But if you are looking to start your trip relaxed, rested, and ready this is the perfect place!
Thank you Yard staff for having me and making a little green oasis in the middle of a very busy fantastic city!
